In Germany, around 3,600 men and 500 women are diagnosed with throat cancer every year. Men are much more likely to develop the malignant tumor than women.

Regular tobacco consumption or smoking is considered the main cause and risk factor for the development of larynx cancer. The likelihood of illness increases with additional alcohol consumption, according to the Robert Koch Institute. As with some other cancers, throat cancer can be promoted by an unhealthy diet - that is, an unbalanced nutrient supply and excessive consumption of meat and fried food. There are basically three types of malignant tumors that develop on the vocal folds: Sublottic laryngeal carcinomas below the vocal fold, larynic lottic carcinomas above it and sublottal larynxia carcinomas in the middle of the throat.
