Much of the shipping industry heritage of Northern Ireland's capital is preserved in this area of the city. The place where the ocean liner that sank on its first voyage was built today also gives its name to a museum, a hotel and a whiskey distillery.

Belfast is a wounded city with the sense of humor typical of a local wake and with an old working-class conscience. At the end of the 19th century, many men and women migrated here from all over Ireland and the United Kingdom. The demand for labor was very great due to the growth experienced by the linen, tobacco, engineering and naval industries. In addition to the Titanic, the White Star Line shipping company built its sister ships: the RMS Olympic and the HMHS Britannic in the Thompson dry dock. The Titanic Studios, where episodes of the Game of Thrones series have been filmed, is also located in the Titanic Quarter. The shipyards built by the Harland & Wolff company boosted the local economy for a century.
