The opposition scored a historic victory in Turkish municipal elections. With a national score of 36%, the Turkish president's party, the AKP, was defeated by the opposition CHP party, a first in decades.

The most symbolic defeat remains Istanbul. Ekrem Imamoglu, a key opposition figure, was largely re-elected mayor of Turkey's largest city. The CHP must prove that it can govern at the national level and make people forget its failure in the last presidential election, says Bayram Balci.
