Two more prisoners kill themselves in Italian jails. Total of inmate suicides to 14 this year.
suicides took place in prisons at Verona and near Caserta. Prison union SAPPE urged Justice Minister Carlo Nordio to take action on chronic understaffing, overcrowding and poor jail conditions which it said had contributed to the recent wave of suicides. Centrist politician Davide Faraone appealed to the government to "stop the massacre" and said prisoners like the Ukrainian manbelonged in psychiatric facilities and not prisons.
