Two motorists swept away by water in Reunion after torrential rains. Both accidents occurred after heavy downpours fell on the southern half of the island.
More than 500mm of rain fell in 48 hours in some places. The soils and waterways of Reunion Island are waterlogged and weakened by the heavy rains from cyclone Belal and storm Candice which have irrigated the island over the last 15 days. All schools in nine southern municipalities remained closed this Monday. The schools in the municipalities concerned have not reopened.
