Cows on dairy farms in the US states of Texas and Kansas have tested positive for a contagious strain of bird flu. This is the first time highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in dairy cows in the United States.

Tests have not revealed any alteration of the virus likely to make it more transmissible to humans. The risk to the public “remains minimal” according to the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), which is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
