In 2019 a new system was launched, the Universal National Service (SNU), not to be confused with the Civic Service which dates from 2010. It is open to all young people aged 15 to 17 of French nationality or residing in France for at least one year, and each year several tens of thousands register.
The aim is to enable these young people, through two distinct stages, to create social bonds, to promote diversity, but also to be useful to others. The SNU is not intended to replace military service.
