Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado warns that Chavismo could arrest her in an "unjustified" manner. In a letter to 18 countries and the EU, the banned candidate denounced a campaign by the regime.

President Nicolás Maduro described his Vente party as “terrorist” Machado swept the opposition primaries to be the presidential candidate on July 28, but a ban on holding public office for 15 years prevented her from registering in the process. Her replacement, academic Corina Yoris, was also unable to register her application due to lack of access to the automated system of the National Electoral Council.
