Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree authorizing the demobilization of conscripts who joined the army before Russia's February 2022 invasion. Authorities did not say how many people were affected.

The people concerned will join the reserve but can also, if they wish, remain in the army. The army is struggling to find volunteers at a time when it is running out of ammunition and facing a surge of Russian forces on all fronts. The question of recruitment to replace soldiers exhausted by two years of war has become a hot political and societal subject in recent months.
