Washington state judge blocks use of videos altered with artificial intelligence as evidence in court. The judge's ruling may be the first of its kind in the United States.

Lawyers for a man accused of murder in a triple homicide had attempted to present cellphone video that had been enhanced with machine learning software. The ruling describes the technology as novel and says it relies on “opaque methods to represent what the artificial intelligence model 'believes' it should be shown.’ “This court considers that the admission of this evidence modified by artificial intelligence (AI) would lead to a confusion of the issues and the testimonies of eyewitnesses,” the judge wrote in the ruling.
