The Year of the Dragon has brought renewed interest in the rich heritage of dragon dances across the country. The origins of this art form can be traced to ancient sacrificial rituals.

Over time, the fragmentation of the dance has increased to give rise to practices bearing typical local characteristics. The Tongliang Dragon Dance dates back to the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties, during which people prayed for rain while worshiping the dragon kings of Chinese mythology.
