The volume of gray matter increases significantly until the age of six, after which this growth stagnates. During puberty, the gray matter actually shrinks slightly. The age of mid-25 is repeatedly cited in research as a point in time at which many developmental processes in the brain are completed. From the age to 30, the brain begins to shrink slightly, but it remains malleable and capable of learning.
