Police entered the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday night to arrest Jorge Glas, who had resided at the diplomatic facility since December. Glas, 54, fled to the embassy on December 17 to seek asylum because he said he was being politically persecuted.

His decision came around the same time authorities ordered him to appear before prosecutors to answer questions in a corruption investigation against him. Prosecutors are investigating alleged mismanagement of funds intended for earthquake reconstruction efforts. Glas was previously convicted of bribery and corruption charges in two separate cases, one of which was linked to Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
