Amputated both legs after jumping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, the former Gurkha soldier had already climbed more. Only two below-knee amputees have ever climbed Everest: New Zealand's Mark Inglis in 2006 and China's Xia Boyu in 2018.

Hari Budha Magar has already climbed several peaks, including Mount Toubkal in Morocco, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Mont Blanc in Europe. He was prevented for several years from competing against the highest mountain in the world because of a Nepalese law prohibiting mountaineering.
