Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna threw the discus 74.35 m on Sunday in Ramona (Oklahoma, United States) He thus erases the oldest men's world record in athletics, the 74.08 m of the German Jürgen Schult which had stood for almost 38 years. The 21-year-old broke the family record: his father Virgilijus was the second performer in history (73.88 in 2000) until Sunday.

He already has two world medals, silver in Eugene (United States) in 2022 and bronze won in Budapest last summer, and is one of the favorites for the Olympic podium this summer in Paris. Jarmila Kratochvilova (then Czechoslovak) holds the oldest world record, for men and women combined, in 1 min 53 sec 28 over 800 m. She threw the record in July 1983 in 1min 53sec 28 over the 800 m, a distance of 1.2m.
