The Premier League announced this Thursday that its clubs have unanimously accepted this new tool which should allow supporters to better understand offside. The new technology “will enable faster and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high quality broadcast graphics” The Premier League specifies that the semi-automatic offside system will come into force not from the start of the season but “after one of the autumn international breaks” It remains to be seen what the precise provisions of the system that the English championship will use will be.

How many cameras will be used? Will a chip be placed in the ball like it was during the last World Cup? Answers will have to be provided in the coming months. The system uses numerous cameras which follow the players and the ball. It must allow a better understanding of the public and viewers so that they better understand why a goal was canceled for an offside position. The English Championship will use this new technology in the fall.
