The New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils played against each other in an NHL match, the American ice hockey league. On March 11, the two teams had already faced each other, and New Yorker Matt Rempe had hit an opponent in the face with his elbow.

A gesture which caused his expulsion and which remained in the minds of New Jersey players. The two teams met again, and wanted to resolve their dispute immediately. As soon as the game kicked off, the ten players on the ice took off their gloves and started a general brawl. This lasted almost 1′15″, before the referees came to separate the last two protagonists. In total, eight players were sent off.
