Yulenmis Aguilar was the best Cuban javelin thrower then, in 2018, and junior world record holder (63.86 meters) “I was a 21-year-old girl who had been dedicated to sports for 10 years when they told me that they no longer counted on me,” says the athlete. Aguilar already participated at the age of 19 in the Rio 16 Games and at 20 in the London World Cup 17.

“There came a moment when I understood that in Cuba my life had no future. I needed to open up,’ says Aguilar, whose desire converged in 2019 with the concerns of Raimundo Fernández, a throwing coach in A Coruña, who was alerted by some Cuban technicians about his situation. The Cuban system, inherited from Russia and the countries of Eastern Europe, squeezes out young talents, even at the cost of injuries, and as proof of Darwin's courage, only those who resist him continue.
