Since July 1, 2013, an electronic toll has been collected on certain sections of the road network. Previously, drivers could choose between a vingette for 10 days, a month or the entire year. The announcement of a toll in Germany triggered a violent reaction. The attempt to introduce them failed spectacularly. In contrast, drivers in many other European countries have to pay to use motorways and similar roads.
