How does time change people? Again and again, director Richard Linklater has addressed this question with extraordinary film projects. In the three films "Before Sunrise", "Before Sunset" and "Before Midnight" with Julie Delpy and Ehtan Hawke, created between 1995 and 2013, he showed characters in the change of almost two decades. His drama "Boyhood", completed in 2014, he filmed over a period of 12 years. So he told in an authentic way of growing up a boy.
Linklater's next project will now be over a 20-year period. As the industry magazine "Variety" reports, he plans to adapt the musical "Merrily We Roll Along". Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt and Blake Jenner are to play leading roles.
The original is about the life of a Broadway composer who becomes a successful Hollywood producer. The play begins at the end of the artist career and then goes back in flashbacks in time. Whether Linklater will retain this narrative structure is not yet known.
