According to the police, a German mountaineer has been fatally injured by a lightning strike on the Austrian Dachstein. The 37-year-old came from Radebeul in the Saxon district of Meissen.
He had climbed on Thursday with a peer colleagues on the 2995 meter high summit. Because they had expected a change in the weather, the two had descended again. They were almost at the end of the via ferrata, when a lightning strike hit the two of them.
According to police, one of the men died at the accident site. The second was injured accordingly. He was able to go down to a mountain hut and call the rescue services there.
On the same day, a woman from Berlin also died in the Austrian Alps. According to the police, the 28-year-old crashed during a hiking tour about 50 feet deep and was fatally injured.
The wife and her father had been on a multi-day tour in East Tyrol on the way. On her hike in the area of Prägranten am Großvenediger, the 28-year-old slipped and fell down a rocky slope. At the time of the accident it was raining a bit.
The father had immediately alerted the emergency services. They would have recovered the body of the woman with a helicopter.
