Where the Second World War began: A staged raid on the transmitter Gleiwitz (now Gliwice) in the then German part of Upper Silesia on 31 August 1939 ushered in the Second World War. The National Socialists needed an excuse for the long-prepared attack on Poland, so they were storming the radio station as SS men disguised as Poles .
