US East Coast: Hurricane "Dorian" changes course

2019-08-31T17:40:34.065Z

Good news for Florida, Baham anxious: Hurricane Dorian, classified as extremely dangerous, could turn away and reach the US further north - and weakened. But that's not for sure.

Hurricane Dorian has changed course and may not be able to hit Florida's east coast directly. The hurricane is expected to turn north offshore and weaken, as reported by the National Hurricane Center on Saturday.

Florida had previously declared a state of emergency and ordered the first forced evictions: residents of offshore islands, potential floodplains and less stable dwellings should get to safety on Sunday morning at the latest. The storm reached wind speeds of around 225 kilometers per hour.

Hurricane "Dorian": sandbags and jammed windows

Politicians called on residents to stock up on sufficient supplies of drinking water, food and medicine. In addition, every family should have enough gasoline to leave the area quickly in the event of an evacuation, it was said. Pictures showed people, who supplied themselves in supermarkets with supplies, at filling stations formed partly long queues. Many citizens filled sand bags to protect themselves against flooding.

"Dorian" is a four-in-five "extremely dangerous" hurricane that would typically lead to major destruction ashore: houses are covered or collapsed, trees and power poles buckle; the supply of electricity, drinking water and communication networks can collapse for days or weeks.

Emergency in three states

Even with the storm turning and instead of landfall, as predicted in Florida in the states of North Carolina and South Carolina, parts of all three states face heavy rain, dangerous flooding, and destructive winds at the start of the week.

The Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, also imposed state of emergency on Saturday to speed up regulatory preparations for the hurricane. "Because of the strength and unpredictability of the storm, we need to prepare ourselves for every possible scenario," he explained. Georgia also declared a state of emergency.

If the storm changes its course again, but can not be ruled out that he could still meet on Florida, warned the US hurricane warning center NHC. According to the predictions, "Dorian" is due to reach the Bahamas on Sunday. There is a "long-lasting phase of life-threatening storm surges and destructive wind" to expect, the NHC warned.
