State elections at ARD and ZDF: stress, misunderstandings, blurring

2019-09-01T23:16:23.022Z

A victory of the phrases - when reporting on the state elections, it seemed as if almost all parties had won in Brandenburg and Saxony. The clear loser was only Wiebke Binder from MDR.

"Racists are no alternative". This slogan makes it the secret star of public reporting on the state elections in Saxony and Brandenburg. And that, although he was not "trendete" on Twitter, yes, not even pronounced.

Politicians thanked "first of all the voters" and showed with their results "nevertheless highly satisfied", excluded coalitions and wanted to "see what happens politically in the country". When Robert Habeck proposes without standing sound, to say anyway, what he thinks of the results, Bettina Schausten lowers his thumb: "Nah, without question we do nothing".

Journalists asked for a "significant bloodletting on the AfD" or Michael Kretschmer's election campaign "very close to the people", discussed consequences for the Grand Coalition or commented on the "great party atmosphere in the Greens here in Potsdam". Jörg Schönenborn announced in all seriousness something "fresh from the extrapolation kitchen".

At some point but the ZDF takes the AfD chairman Alexander Gauland in the shortage. The stands in Potsdam and is asked for the right wing "wings", whether the may be harmful to his party. "I do not know how they come up with that," says Gauland, looking down hard. The moderation "has to check it out again", because the top candidate in Brandenburg, Andreas Kalbitz, is not "harmful to your party"?

It may happen, we are finally at the MDR

Oh well, says Gauland and further lowers the head, which was "not right-wing extremist" and not involved in any "riots" in Greece. That which was read in the SPIEGEL ("Relotius!"), Was not occupied at all. Gauland is allowed to say frankly and freely, although Kalbitz himself has admitted to participating in a neo-Nazi march in Athens.

While the AfD senior speaks, he stands in front of a glass wall. And there, outside, among the electorate, someone is slowly sneaking up from behind with a painted poster. A few steps to the right, then to the left, a little higher, and then, while Gauland rejects everything, you can read it beautifully: "racists are no alternative."

It does not seem to have been that clear, at least with the neighbor station ARD. Moderator Wiebke Binder of the executive MDR initially confused the CDU with the FPD boss in the country. May occur. Moreover, she confuses Thomas de Maizière with Lothar de Maizière. May occur. The Saxon AfD candidate Jörg Urban assures her almost submissively, it was of course also "positive" on the AFD been reported: "In any case." It may happen, we are finally at the MDR.

MDR found itself obliged to comment

Binder, meanwhile, is losing her way through her conversation with Marco Wanderwitz of the Saxon CDU. Binder notes: "A stable two-party coalition, a bourgeois, would theoretically yes with the AfD possible." Wanderwitz reacts immediately: "A coalition with the AfD would not be a bourgeois coalition", and even colleagues such as Arnd Henze from the ARD capital studio spontaneously distance themselves via Twitter.

No: not "THE ARD". Many employees will be just as irritated by this statement of the # MDR presenter as you! But the #MDR does not blur for the first time the borders to the far right! https://t.co/X88iwTjrOY

Thus, Binder ignored not only insights on key politicians of the AfD or the course of the Saxon CDU at least at the state level. She even takes the narrative of a stammering Alice Weidel ("We have a strong result that has also been guilty of our strong election campaign") that "60 percent of the people in Saxony had elected conservative". Whereby even Weidel does not believe its own propaganda and complains about the "bourgeois style of exclusion" of the CDU.

Thus, where the AfD would like to come in, Binder moderates them in anticipation. So that would feel like a public law under the aegis of the AfD. Waving around a racist with a "racist are not an alternative" sign, that should not be more. Urgently, the MDR found itself obliged to a statement and speaks of stress, misunderstandings and blurring.

To the program "state election in Saxony and Brandenburg" @ Das Erste: Under the enormous stress of a live broadcast in such a double election with constantly new results and changing constellations can lead to misunderstandings and blurring can happen @mdrde

Binder's colleague Sascha Hingst also performs at least one egg dance as he moderates a conversation with AfD man Björn Höcke. Its wing was "national conservative", some would call it "nationalistic", well, and their "leader", well, better: "leader" Björn Höcke, we learn, wishes "the old parties" a lucky hand in the coalition.

The issue of the bourgeoisie is also an issue in the classification of Anne Will in the later evening. Two journalists (m / f), two prime ministers (m / f) and two party leaders, including Gauland, have been invited: "We are on our way to becoming the civic people's party," he explains. Here it is Manuela Schwesig, who vehemently contradicts: "They are not bourgeois!"

Kenya is about, and the East is about neglect and listening. Gripping with hands is the relief that the wound was deep, but not deadly. And the hope that the authoritarian wave might have broken that day.
