A few hours before the announcement of the winners of the 76th Venice Film Festival, hundreds of climate activists occupied the red carpet in front of the Filmpalast in the lagoon city in the early morning.

Protest in Venice: "The earth is burning"The more than 300 demonstrators wore white overalls and held up banners. "The earth is burning, it's time to fight," the organizers of Globalproject wrote on their Facebook page: "Today, the climate camp in Venice is sending a wake-up call!" Even opponents of large cruise ships in Venice joined the protests that began before dawn.
The movie stars usually pose on the red carpet in front of the Palazzo del Cinema di Venezia. In the glamorous building on the Lido, in the evening, the Film Festival comes to an end with the awarding of the Golden Lion for best film and other awards.
Favorites for the Golden Lion include Roman Polanski's "J'accuse", Pablo Larrain's "Ema" and Steven Soderbergh's "The Laundromat (The Money Laundering)". Find out more about this year's Film Festival.
