New York Police Catch 82

2019-09-09T14:10:27.294Z

He looked like a gentleman - but as soon as the residents were away, he should have broken into them. The New York police have arrested a retiree, who most probably went on holiday on a foray.

He is said to have stolen watches, wedding rings, heirlooms and jewelry - when others went on vacation, a retiree from the US state of Florida presumably went on forays. The New York Police arrested an 82-year-old on the Upper East Side. She accuses the man of stealing $ 100,000 worth of items last year alone in downtown Manhattan.

Several media, including The New York Times and CNN, report how the elderly gentleman gained access to the exclusive apartments. According to the investigators, the man with different strategies passed the porters at the entrance of the houses. Accordingly, he sometimes stated that he was living there himself or visiting a friend. Other times, he entangled the locals in conversations or complimented their dogs and thus got into the house with them. He then reached the various floors by elevator.

In the corridors, he was looking for the investigators for apartments, where large amounts of mail or newspapers at the door indicated that the residents were away. In the meantime, when a local resident met him, he said he had erred in the floor. "He was not the typical ski mask guy," investigator Kevin Blacke told The New York Times. "He looked like a typical elderly gentleman." His inconspicuous behavior, his simple clothes and his large glasses would have reinforced the impression.

On holidays, he apparently preferred to foray

The New York police searched for years for the suspect. Because he presumably went on a foray, especially on holidays such as Memorial Day, the National Holiday or the weekend of the Labor Day, the investigators called him the "holiday burglar". The investigation has become frustrating with the years, said police officer Blacke. For every holiday, the investigators hoped to grab the man, but only a week and a half ago civilian arrested the 82-year-olds.

On that Saturday he was turned away by a porter when he wanted to gain access to a residential building. The older man had said he wanted to visit a friend named Suarez. When the doorman informed him that a gentleman with that name would not live in the building and expelled him from the entrance hall, the investigators were waiting outside the door. According to the police, police officers had been monitoring the 82-year-old for some time. Now they caught him with a blank black bag and arrested the man. He is accused of burglary and serious theft, threatened by up to 15 years imprisonment. His lawyer left the allegations against his client at the request of "New York Times" and CNN uncommented.

The older man is no stranger to the police

The police believe that the older man is responsible for much more burglaries than previously thought. He is considered a suspect in at least ten cases in the past five years in New York. The value of his prey is said to have amounted to $ 400,000. In other states, such as California, Arizona or Pennsylvania, he could have committed burglaries.

For the investigators, the older man is no stranger. Already in 2001 he was caught in a break-in on the Upper East Side. When a resident discovered him in his apartment, the man claimed to be looking for a gas leak. But the alarmed police discovered in his pocket 42 pieces of jewelry and a list of different apartments, to which he had noted times. When he was released on bail, the man sat down with a new identity.

He remained untraceable for the authorities. Until now.
