A serious accident on a flooded street in western Morocco has killed at least 17 people.

In Morocco, a bus crashed on its way from Casablanca to Rissani, a city near the border with Algeria. 17 people were reportedly killed. At least 30 others were injured and taken to hospitals. Her condition was stable, they said.

According to the local health authority, several bodies were recovered one day after the accident near the town of Errachidia.

Pictures of the Moroccan transmitter 2M showed rescue work with heavy equipment. The driver of the bus had appeared in a hospital, after he had first fled the accident, the channel reported, citing the authorities. He was taken in police custody and should now be interviewed by investigators to the accident.

The bus had apparently strayed from the road after heavy rains and tumbled down a slope. One of the injured told transmitter 2M that two strong waves had hit the vehicle, which had then fallen over. The passengers were taken by bus into a river valley.

In Morocco it has been raining heavily for ten days, heavy thunderstorms have led to flooding.
