Spectacular rescue operation off the coast of Georgia: helpers have brought four trapped sailors from the capsized "Golden Ray". Previously, a hole was drilled in the belly of the freighter.

Outside the port of Brunswick, Georgia, the relief workers can report success in rescuing the remaining crew members of the Golden Ray. After capsizing the 200-meter-long freighter, all four trapped sailors have been released.

The Golden Ray crashed and capsized overnight off the coast of Georgia. The reason was still unclear, according to the US Coast Guard. On board were therefore 24 people, including an American pilot. 20 people were immediately rescued, four were initially considered missing.

After the accident, the South Korean Foreign Ministry had reported that there were four South Korean crew members. They were probably still in the engine room of the car carrier.

On Monday, the US Coast Guard had initially communicated that the four had been found and lived. Then the rescue started. Forces first drilled a hole in the hull of the freighter to provide the people trapped with water and food.

Despite the emergency, the sailors are doing comparatively well

Two of them have been released from their predicament by this hole. The sailors are in relatively good health, the Coast Guard said.

Owner of the 2017 built "Golden Ray" is the South Korean logistics company Hyundai Glovis. She drove under the flag of the Marshall Islands, on board are apparently thousands of cars.

According to the local authorities, a threat to the environment is currently not expected from the capsized ship. Nevertheless, corresponding schedules have been put into effect. Ships may not approach the damaged freighter for the time being.
