The European Film Prize will be awarded for the 32nd time on December 7th in Berlin - with a novelty. For the first time ever, the European Film Academy (EFA), which has been promoting the film, has awarded a prize for the best series: the European Achievement in Fiction Series Award. In 2019, the "Babylon Berlin" makers Achim von Borries, Henk Handloegten and Tom Tykwer will be honored.
This is a tribute to a series, which is also a passionate cinematic spectacle and a precise representation of the political and social realities in Berlin in the 1920s, said the EFA.
At the same time, the organization, which counts more than 3,600 filmmakers as its members, wants to take into account the changes in the film landscape. "For younger generations, series are a much more popular format than movies, and if we want to be relevant to our audience, the European Film Awards must reflect that," said EFA chair and director Agnieszka Holland.
With the European Achievement in Fiction Series Award the price rain for "Babylon Berlin" continues: The series has already won the Grimme-Preis, the German Television Award, the Bambi and the Golden Camera. For the winter, according to Sky, who cooperates in the production with the ARD, the third season in the program of the pay station.
The 12 new episodes are based on station information on the Volker Kutscher novel "The Dumb Death". Already before completion of the filming the continuation of the series was sold in 35 countries. In the ARD the new season will be on view in autumn 2020.
