25 kilometers from the nuclear ruins of Fukushima, Japan's authorities have allowed bathing in certain areas again. In 2011, it had come to the worst reactor disaster since Chernobyl.

Hilarious surfing kids and surfers looking for the next wave: For the first time since the reactor disaster more than eight years ago, a beach in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan has been reopened. Many people were bathing at Hitaizumi Beach in the city of Minamisoma in the Pacific, only about 25 kilometers from the atomic ruins.

Reactors 1 to 3 of the Fukushima nuclear power plant were destroyed on 11 March 2011 as a result of an earthquake and tsunami. Because the cooling system failed, it came to meltdown. Because of the radioactive radiation around 160,000 residents had to flee at that time. Still, around 30,000 people can not go back. The disaster was the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.

"I grew up here with a view of the sea, and for the first time (...), brings back a touch of nostalgia," said Sayaka Mori of Kyodo news agency while walking the beach with her husband and three children. Her house, which was close to the beach, had been torn away by the tsunami in 2011.

Hundreds of spent and unused fuel rods are still stored in the power plant, which are to be removed in the coming years.
