A fire has broken out in a Düsseldorf hospital. One person was killed. Dozens of other people are injured - seven of them life-threatening.

In a fire in a hospital in Düsseldorf, one person died, dozens more people were injured. Seven of them were life threatening, four were seriously injured, said a spokesman for the fire department early Tuesday morning. 61 more people suffered smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out on late Monday evening at the Marien Hospital in the district of Pempelfort. The fire brigade could not provide any information on the cause. It is also unclear whether the dead man was a patient. The fire had broken out in a patient room where the dead man was also discovered. The smoke spread over five floors of the hospital.

Some seriously injured were treated in the clinic parking lot until they could be transferred to other hospitals. 43 patients were accommodated in other buildings of the clinic. The firefighters needed an hour to extinguish the fire: Oxygen from an oxygen line running in the room had added to the fire.
