Late summer cinema: wide awake and dreamy at the same time

2019-09-11T05:04:28.289Z

Erotic capital flows on the Côte d'Azur: Rebecca Zlotowski succeeds with "A light girl" an exceptionally smart summer movie, in which she somehow lets herself play a former escort girl.

Sofia on the beach. She enjoys the sun, the sea and her plump body, on her bikini pants strums a gold chain with strawberries. The film enjoys - and he likes to be touched by the aura of the young woman, who is both sensual and rapturous. The audacity that "openly lends itself to a light girl", has something fine at all Emphase. Their impulses are admiration, amazement - and interest.

Because Rebecca Zlotowski's film is told from the perspective of her younger cousin Naïma (Mina Farid): Just turned 16, finished school and, in contrast to the experienced Sofia (Zahia Dehar) still a real-life teenager, the annoying questions about career choices and future with answered a childish shrug.

"A light girl": Look and enjoy

Sofia, who appears at the beginning of the summer holidays, takes Naïma like a sister. Her presence, which temporarily overshadows the caressing charm of her gay friend Dodo, seems to directly increase her limited world. This is even noticeable when the two cousins in the small high-rise apartment in Cannes, where Naïma lives with her mother, sit on the narrow balcony with the tattered awnings.

At bathing outings and club visits, Sofia's artificial beauty and lasciviousness catch everyone's eye - including Andres's (Nuno Lopez). The Brazilian multimillionaire and art collector is on the "winning streak" with his colleague Philippe (Benôit Magimel). In the evening, the luxury yacht is located at the port of Cannes, directly on the promenade: the deck is a stage with an evening program for ice-infatuated foot soldiers. Sofia, who has a professional routine in sending out the signs of the exchange, will soon be reloaded to the other side. Naïma is thus given access to a world that is at best known from the bottom of the service floor.

She's not looking for love and feelings, Sofia once explains to her cousin. What they irritated against were adventures and sensations ("sensations"). Rebecca Zlotowski's Cinema, one of the most interesting filmmakers in France since her debut "Belle épine" (2010), is one of sensations, atmospheres and perceptual intensities, less one of narrative and psychological figure-making. The atmospheric charge was never as light and fluffy knitted as in "A simple girl".

A counter story to the boulevard

In the guise of a Rohmerian summer movie (the opening scene is a direct allusion to "Die Sammlerin"), the film looks at the complex web of sexual, economic and cultural power relations in a refreshingly unprogrammatic way. He manages the feat of being wide awake and dreamy at the same time.

The "Winning Streak" becomes in the film the scene of different desires and repulsive movements. Naïma's curiosity, fascination and lust guided view of the affluent milieu and Sofia's use of the body also awakens her feelings, which are difficult to name. Their participant observation meets the disparaging looks of the yacht employees. In their beige work clothes degraded to inconspicuous interior, they have to give the members of their own class suddenly champagne and carry the shoes behind.

But even the collector Sofia demands the temporary participation in the capital flows a lot. To be sure, it disarms the contempt you get from men and women, mostly through non-acceptance or surprising knowledge (she has read her Marguerite Duras). But there are also moments when their indifferent "et alors" are silenced.

Sofia is played by the French-Algerian lingerie designer and Instagram celebrity Zahia Dehar, who played the female lead in a sex scandal in her time as an escort girl, in which two football players of the French national team were involved. As is customary in these cases, she was most violent in the moral judgment.

"A light girl" is therefore also a counter-narrative not only to the glaring stories of the boulevard. It also contradicts those parts of the enlightened society that like to refer women like Zahia and Sofia from the places of emancipated femininity and sophistication. Zlotowski puts her in the warm, bright sunlight.
