A court in Turkey has sentenced football professional Arda Turan to a suspended sentence of two years and eight months. The 32-year-old was convicted, among other things for illegal possession of weapons and bodily harm. Turan was acquitted of allegations of sexual harassment, Anadolu state news agency reported on Wednesday.
Last year, Turan and pop singer Berkay Sahin got into an argument in an Istanbul club. According to media reports, the musician had confronted the footballer after he had approached his wife. Turan hit Sahin in the face and broke his nose. When he was admitted to hospital, Turan drove him. The footballer had a weapon with him, a shot fell and caused panic.
Turan's club Medipol Basaksehir had already given the player a fine of 2.5 million lira (about 390,000 euros) because of the incident. In May last year, Turan was suspended for 16 games and fined for attacking the linesman at a home game.
Turan played 100 times for the Turkish national team. He ran for the last time in 2017 for the team.
