The severe storm over the western Mediterranean has hit the Spanish mainland coast after the Balearic Islands. In the province of Albacete, two people lost their lives, Spanish media reported. They had been carried away by the floods in the municipality of Caudete in their car.
In the municipality of Ontinyent in the province of Valencia, a river overflowed the banks, 40 inhabitants were rescued from the floods and 150 others were brought to safety as a precaution. The wall of a school collapsed, injured did not exist. Never since the records began in 1917 had so much rain fallen in Ontinyent, it was said. On a beach in Dénia (Alicante) there should have been a small tornado, as the newspaper "El País" reported.
The storm moved further southwest towards Murcia and Almeria. In Valencia, the alarm at midday was downgraded to yellow, while in the other three provinces red was still in use. In some areas, it was reported that up to 200 liters of rain fell over twelve hours, or about one third of the annual rainfall in Berlin.
The storm with the abbreviation DANA (isolated low-pressure area at high altitudes) had previously raged over the Balearic Islands, left property damage and delayed the start of school after the summer holidays in parts of the island of Mallorca.
