He was known for hits like "Two Tickets to Paradise" and "Take Me Home Tonight": The musician Eddie Money, who had star status, especially in the US, is dead. He died of cancer at age 70.

"With a heavy heart we say goodbye", it said in a statement of his family. "It's so hard to imagine a world without him, though he'll live forever through his music."

The artist was born as Edward Joseph Mahoney in New York into a policeman's family and considered first a career with the security forces, before he decided nevertheless for a career as a singer. For a while he appeared in California with an earlier backround band by Janis Joplin. After he was taken on Columbia Records under contract, he opened temporarily the concerts of the Rolling Stones.

For "Take Me Home Tonight" Money received in 1987 a Grammy nomination; The song also features Ronnie Spector, who quotes her own line "Be My Baby" from the eponymous Ronettes hit in the chorus. "Two Tickets to Paradise" became an evergreen of the classic rock and also appeared among others at the "Simpsons".
