According to authorities, unknown persons broke into the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle during the night and handcuffed the owners. Overall, they are said to have stolen jewels and cash worth two million euros.

In a stately French castle, suspected burglars apparently made big booty. Six strangers allegedly stole jewels and cash worth about two million euros, according to the prosecution.

The perpetrators had tied up the owners, the police said. The prosecution said that they were apparently unarmed. The old couple remained unhurt.

Vaux-le-Vicomte is regarded as a model for the expansion of Versailles Palace to the residence of "Sun King" Louis XIV. Vaux-le-Vicomte Castle had Ludwigs Finance Minister Nicolas Fouquet built southeast of Paris until 1661.

According to legend, the stately castle with its magnificent garden brought the Minister of Finance but no luck: Louis XIV is said to have been jealous of Fouquet and had him imprisoned for life. After the arrest, the monarch had the castle confiscated - and expanded Versailles.
