Enlightenment books for children: answers from the gut

2019-09-22T16:46:46.884Z

Every generation has to be informed anew. It's a lot easier with a funny book. Here are four recommendations for different ages.

Everyone has their anecdote about sex education. Even our children, I'm afraid, will eventually report on our weak points. Anyway, my own father, a young, free-spirited medical student, was really willing to answer every question and pushed me early on the "Sexology Atlas" in the hand. I always enjoyed studying the photos and pictures immensely. But the photo of the birth apparently overwhelmed my imagination. "From the gut" meant for me that the baby - whatever - is born through the abdominal wall. Only years later I was to learn the whole truth.

Today's enlightenment books about the body, sexuality or having children do not raise any misunderstandings. Here is clearly stated, what happens where. And today it's no longer just about the act of reproduction, but also the many feelings around it.

Unlike in the classic "Peter, Ida and Minimum" from 1979, not only different family constellations occur, also the abuse scandals and #metoo have left their mark: Enlightenment means today to give the children a self-confident, good body feeling and to think about which types of touch are right or wrong.

All books would be only half as good without the clever and funny illustrations. Because the pictures not only provide helpful intuition, but the portion of humor, which one should have on this topic. After all, every child should look forward to growing up.

All have a butt

Wonderful title that nicely sums up the content: This is about the body. How do I look? And what can I do with my body? Great pictures with short texts or questions to talk about with the child. Children can name body parts, think about how they pee or what sounds they make with their bodies. Wonderfully body-affirming. Everyone is right here.

What's going on here? Skin colors, body shapes, old or young - there are so many types of people. A multi-layered explorer book that lets you talk to and even move with small children.

Best time to read: After bathing.

clear up me

Any questions? Yes many. And so many, that there is now a second volume with even more genuine children's questions. The author is a sex pedagogue on elementary schools and has there collected the questions of children, which were then illustrated by the ingenious Anke Kuhl. The result is a kind of unsorted reference book, through which one can scroll with a lot of fun.

What's going on here? One question - one answer. Example: Did puberty exist in the age of chivalry? How does a kiss feel? Katharina von der Gathen answers quizzical and informative questions about body, sex and love. There may be a gap for some adults.

Best reading time: In the break.

Do not look! The (almost) secret enlightenment book

Puberty. Body and mind are a construction site and many questions open. How good if you can trust someone. Voice break, homosexuality, bras, pregnancy and pimples are just a few of the many topics. Linguistically, it does not quite match the age-appropriate tone for my taste. Fill words and long sentences make the lyrics of the children often sound a bit precocious and not like a real diary. But the idea counts and it is nice that the enlightenment is told along a story.

What's going on here? 11-year-old Pia and her boyfriend Paul find a condom on the playground and realize that they do not know all about sex. Therefore, they decide to become sexologists and write down their findings in a common journal. The entries of the two alternate, there are plenty of pictures and info boxes with additional explanations.

Best time to read: In bed.

Chocolate Streuselgross. A baby in mom's stomach

It's so exciting when your own mother is pregnant. How her body changes, what's going on inside her. And then suddenly you have a brother or a sister! In this book from the Netherlands the baby is born at home. The fact that you can get children in the hospital, is mentioned only briefly. But then you can talk about it with the child.

What's going on here? Maxi's mother is pregnant. How can that be and what happens now? Some things are really not understandable for Maxi. A cuddly family story about having children with lots of pictures in child-friendly language.
