The legal processing of an unprecedented murder series in Germany continues. The public prosecutor's office Oldenburg has indicted five supervisors of the convicted patient murderer Niels Högel. She accuses them of manslaughter by omitting. At first the "Nordwest-Zeitung" reported about it.
Högel was convicted in early June by the district court of Oldenburg for murder in 85 cases. Between 2000 and 2005, he had killed patients in intensive care units in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst (read more about the case here).
more on the subject
The defendants are the former managing director, the former nursing director, the then head physician of cardiac surgery, the chief anesthetist and a station manager. Three of them are no longer working in the hospital today.
The ex-colleagues had recognized no later than the end of October 2001 that the nurse was dangerous. At the time, there was supposed to be a list that indicated an above-average number of resuscitations and deaths when Högel was present.
Out of concern for the reputation of their house, the accused remained inactive. So they moved Högel to another station. There it came to new problems, Högel then had been released with full salary three months.
Praised with very good testimony
Finally he got a very good report and left the hospital. With the testimony, the defendants on the charges disguised the deadly danger posed by the nurse. A short time later Högel started in Delmenhorst, where he committed more murders.
The ex-managing director and the former nursing director are accused of manslaughter by omitting in 63 cases, the anesthesia chief physician in 60 cases, the cardiac surgery chief physician and the ward manager in three cases.
Högel has filed an appeal against the June ruling. Until a decision he can not testify to his case as a witness in other processes.
