The popular superhero Spider-Man gets a new movie in the Marvel Universe. A deal was announced by Sony Pictures and the Walt Disney Corporation. The film is scheduled to be released in July 2021, starring for the third time Tom Holland.
The deal comes as a surprise. As early as August, negotiations between Sony Pictures and co-producer Marvel, which belongs to the Disney group, had failed. Fans feared that Spider-Man could no longer be seen in the Marvel-produced "Avengers" films. At #SaveSpiderMan, users on Twitter called for the decision to be reversed - and continue to let Spider-Man fight evil in the Marvel Universe.
The Spider-Man movies also threatened to lose their creative producer, the Marvel boss Kevin Feige. He had revived the character after some badly adopted films. But he is back on board with the now announced production. "I'm thrilled that Spidey's journey continues in the Marvel Universe," Feige said in a statement.

20 years ago, Sony bought the rights to the character of the then battered Marvel Corporation. The Deal: Five percent of the revenue of each movie and shares in the merchandise. After the huge successes of the recent Spider-Man films Marvel but wanted a larger share, which had led to open dispute with Sony Pictures.
