In a traffic accident in eastern China at least 36 people were killed, 36 others were injured.
A fully loaded coach crashed onto a highway in Jiangsu province on Saturday with a lorry, the authorities said on Sunday. The cause of the accident, according to a first investigation, was a broken tire on the bus. The rescue operation lasted eight hours. During this time, the expressway between Changchun and Shenzhen, where the accident happened, was closed.
Of the 36 injured, nine suffered serious injuries, according to Yixing Public Security Bureau. Twenty-six people were reported to have suffered less severe injuries and one person was released from hospital.
Fatal traffic accidents are common in China because traffic regulations are often ignored. According to authorities, 58,000 people died in traffic accidents in the People's Republic in 2015. China has about 1.4 billion inhabitants, but a much lower passenger car density than, for example, the EU.
