Barack Obama came to Munich at the right time. In the Bavarian capital is just Oktoberfest - and the former US President suspected in the reason for his visit: His team wanted to visit the festival, so he was here, he joked on the stage of the trade fair "Bits & Pretzels".
But for Obama, a visit should be difficult. "The Secret Service gets a bit nervous," he said. But maybe he could dress up - with a false beard, for example.
Even without the visit, he brings some Bavarian spirit home: "I have been given a Lederhose." He tried it on undisturbed in his hotel. "I thought I looked pretty good, I'll wear it for Michelle."
According to their own statements, those responsible have been campaigning for two years to bring Obama to Munich. On stage, the 58-year-old told of his time as US President and talked about leadership.
"I have to come back"
Already in 2016, Obama said: "I've never been to the Oktoberfest in Germany before, so I have to come back and it'll be more fun if I'm not a president anymore."
The organizers of "Bits & Pretzels" always manage to bring famous guests to Munich. In 2016, Hollywood star Kevin Spacey, who had fallen into disgrace after harassment charges, gave the opening speech. The billionaire Richard Branson also spoke at the event, this year, the actress Jessica Alba announced.
