Already Germany's greatest thinker moved to Italy centuries ago, not only Goethe went on an educational journey there. Italy was and is one of the most popular holiday destinations of the Germans, a longing place between the Mediterranean and the Alps. A country that stands for tradition and history - and, of course, for good food.

But then there are also the mafia's miserable business, mass tourism and last but not least the gloomy chapter of fascism: the relationship between Germany and Italy is complex and changeable. For centuries, the relationship between longing and mistrust has been changing - and yet both countries feel deeply connected.

How did the close relationship come about? What traditions are hidden behind the yearning for the South, which is still widespread today?

This SPIEGEL editor Eva-Maria Schnurr speaks with the renowned Renaissance historian and profound Italian connoisseur Volker Reinhardt. The interview was recorded as part of the event series "Spiegel Live" in June at the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg.
