More than a year after the accident with 43 dead in Genoa, the construction of a new motorway bridge continues. On Tuesday, the installation of the first new section of track began. By next April, the highway bridge will be rebuilt, promised Marco Bucci, the mayor of the Italian city and Commissioner for Reconstruction.
Cranes pulled a 50 meter long and 500 ton steel piece 40 meters into the air to lift it on two pillars. The operation should take up to five hours.
The new viaduct was designed by star architect Renzo Piano, originally from Genoa. It should resemble a "ship passing through the valley," said Piano. "It's the right idea, Genoa is a city of the sea."
The Morandi Motorway Bridge collapsed on August 14, 2018. An approximately 180-meter-long section of the road had fallen during a storm into the depths - with her vehicles and their occupants. It is still unclear how it came to the tragedy.
It is being investigated against more than 70 people and against the motorway operator Autostrade per l'Italia, which is controlled by the Benetton family through the Atlantia Group. The Atlantia boss resigned in September. The million-euro compensation for him caused outrage among the bereaved.
