Diahann Carroll: "Denver clan" actress died

American actress Diahann Carroll died. She became famous mainly for her portrayal in the series "The Denver clan". Before that, however, she was also one of the African American pioneers on US television.



The US actress and singer Diahann Carroll, who became known in Germany mainly through the television series "The Denver clan" has died.

According to her spokeswoman, she died Friday at age 84 at home in Los Angeles. Accordingly, she suffered for years from breast cancer. Carroll was one of the African American pioneers on US television.

Carroll was born in the New York Bronx in 1935 and began her career as a singer. But already in the 50s, she made her first Hollywood films, such as "Porgy and Bess" directed by Otto Preminger.

In 1968, she made her debut as a widowed and single-parent nurse in the US television series "Julia" a premiere: Until then, African American actresses were only supporting roles or roles as stereotypes. "Julia" earned her a Golden Globe, one of the most prestigious awards for feature films and television programs. For her portrayal in the social comedy "Claudine" she was nominated for the lead role in an Oscar.

Caroll became famous internationally through "Denver clan" - from the fourth season in 1983, she played the nightclub owners Dominique Devereaux, the opposite of the intriguing beast Alexis Colby, presented by Joan Collins. In an interview she said, "I want to be rich and ruthless, I want to be the first black beast on TV."

In recent years, Caroll has played various guest roles in television series such as Gray's Anatomy or White Collar.
