70-year-old drives Andean "Sky Race": Fleet on the road

When she takes care of her grandchildren, Mirtha Munoz takes the children on a bike ride. This time, however, she drove without a family - on one of the toughest routes in the world.



Around 60 kilometers - that does not sound long for experienced cyclists. But in the so-called sky race in Bolivia, the drivers from low-lying jungle area high in the Andes. Rain, fog and sometimes even rock falls complicate the tour.

All this did not deter the 70-year-old Bolivian Mirtha Munoz. She has completed the race as the oldest participant so far.

The ride goes through Yungas Road, also known in Bolivia as the "Death Road". The reason: According to estimates, 200 to 300 motorists have crashed on the narrow, mountainous road for many years.

On the tour through the Andes are some altitude to overcome

Munoz relates that she started cycling for a sad reason - her son died unexpectedly. A friendly psychologist told her that driving could help her overcome grief and build something new.

Mostly, the 70-year-old drives but less strenuous routes - together with her six grandchildren.
