Oktoberfest review: Less visitors, less beer - but also fewer crimes

2019-10-06T13:29:24.923Z

More than six million people flocked to the Oktoberfest this year. The drinking was significantly less, the appetite was as high as last year: 124 oxen and 29 calves.

Slightly rainy, peaceful and record-free, the Oktoberfest comes to an end this year. According to the festival organizers, around 6.3 million guests flocked to the festival in the two festive weeks - as many as in the previous year. "It was a beautiful Oktoberfest," said the Munich Economic Secretary and party leader Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) at the end of the Volksfest. "We had a peaceful Oktoberfest with a relaxed and cheerful party crowd."

The police reported a slight drop in offenses by one percent to 914. However, the officials had to move out much more frequently (2018: 1786). This shows that the visitors alerted police early in possible conflict situations, said the Munich police spokesman Marcus da Gloria Martins.

The guests had a good appetite and, as in the previous year, consumed 124 oxen and 29 calves (2018: 27). But they were more restrained with the beer: 7.3 million measures were ordered in the marquees - and thus 200,000 less than in the previous year. In the Wiesn-sanitary guard, the helpers also had to treat less beer corpses: The Aicher Ambulanz Union registered around 600 intoxications, almost 120 fewer than in the previous year.

Nevertheless, there was a record in the drunk driving: road users were stopped 774 times under the influence of alcohol - 414 of them alone on electric scooters.
