The Nobel Prize for medicine is endowed with nine million Swedish kroner, which corresponds to around 830,000 euros. Last year, researchers James Allison and Tasuku Honjo received the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology. They were honored for research on therapies in which the immune system attacks cancer cells.

The childless chemist Alfred Nobel had bequeathed most of his fortune to his foundation, which since 1901 - five years after Nobel's death - annually awards the Nobel Prize in five categories: Medicine and Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace.
