In selfie shots in a river, four people drowned in India. As the police said in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Monday, six people wanted to do self-portraits on hip-high water on Sunday when a person suddenly stepped into a sink in the riverbed, slipped and pulled their companions with them.
According to The Hindu newspaper, six family members wanted to take a selfie in the water by hand, including a newlywed couple. The man survived according to the information and was able to save his sister. For his wife and three teenagers, however, any help came too late. One of the teenagers, according to the newspaper, was the one who slipped.
In India, such incidents are more common. Between October 2011 and November 2017, at least 259 people worldwide took selfie photos, according to the Indian Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care. At the top of the statistics is therefore India, followed by Russia, the USA and Pakistan.
The Indian authorities have been alarmed at selfie taking deaths and have set up zones where such photographs are prohibited - 16 in Mumbai alone, the country's largest city.
