Desperate Rebellion: View into a barracks in the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau (undated photo). Here, on October 7, 1944, a group of Jewish prisoners seek their henchmen. The SS beat the partly spontaneous, partly long-planned uprising within a few hours. In the end, three SS men and 452 prisoners are dead. "One by one, as in a rabbit hunt, hit the ground," recalled the prisoner Filip Müller.
