2019-10-08T09:17:25.694Z

In Hesse, a man drove a stolen truck into several cars - there were eight injured. Now first details about the alleged perpetrator have become known. His motive is unclear.

The man who stole a truck in Hesse and thus rammed several cars is, according to SPIEGEL information 32 years old and comes from Syria. He has come to the attention of the authorities for dangerous bodily harm, drug possession and shoplifting - but not as an extremist.

After the investigation, the suspect stole a truck on Monday night, drove into several vehicles at an intersection and pushed them into each other. Eight people were injured, according to police.

The Frankfurt Attorney General's Office on Tuesday morning expressly did not want to speak of a terrorist background to the incident. The investigation continued, said the spokesman for the Attorney General Frankfurt, Alexander Badle, the SPIEGEL.

No valid residence permit

The suspect came to SPIEGEL information in November 2015 to Germany. Since 1 October 2019, he no longer has a valid residence permit. He was said to have called "Allah" at the arrest and fiercely resisted. The Hesse LKA has already searched the apartment of the man and that of a family member.

By chance, there was a group of Federal Police trainees at the scene. Some of the group completed a running workout, others sat in a car, which was apparently also affected by the impact. The police first thought it was an accident and provided first aid. The joggers finally arrested the suspect.

The forensics is now completed, the truck was towed. He was being investigated in a police building, a spokesman said. The mayor of Limburg, Marius Hahn (SPD), said: "I am shocked and in my thoughts with the injured accident victims and their families."
